Trailers & Loads

The trailers we run, the loads they’re built for, and the limits — so you know before you ask.

Our trailers

The tow vehicle is a VW Touareg with a factory towbar rated for 3,500 kg braked. Behind it we run four trailer types, each chosen for a class of load rather than trying to make one flatbed do everything. If your load already sits on its own roadworthy trailer, we can tow that instead — we carry spare lighting boards, a 13-pin/7-pin adaptor and a breakaway cable.

⛵

Bunked boat trailer

Adjustable bunks and rollers, manual winch and bow snubber. Suits RIBs and hard boats to around 7 m and 1,800 kg. Jet skis and small dinghies go on a dedicated PWC trailer or their own.

🚜

Plant trailer

Twin-axle with fold-down ramps, a headboard and rated lashing points. Takes tracked and wheeled machines to about 2,700 kg — micro and mini diggers, 1-tonne dumpers, compact tractors, rollers.

🚗

Tilt-bed car transporter

Low-angle tilt bed with electric winch and wheel straps, so non-runners and low classics load without scraping. Cars up to roughly 2,000 kg and 4.8 m long.

♨

Flatbed with sides

General-purpose flatbed for hot tubs, swim spa sections, crated goods, quads, mowers and awkward one-offs. Full ratchet-strap kit, corner protectors and padding.

Loads we move regularly

  • Boats: RIBs, sports boats, speedboats, fishing boats, day boats, sailing dinghies, small cruisers and yachts on trailers, rowing shells, tenders. Boat transport
  • Watercraft: jet skis and PWCs, kayaks and canoes in bulk, paddleboard fleets, inflatable RIBs on their own trailers.
  • Plant: micro/mini excavators, dumpers, compact tractors, mowers, rollers, trenchers, compressors, generators, attachments. Plant transport
  • Hot tubs: standard hot tubs, plug-and-play spas, swim spas in sections, spa covers and lifters. Hot tub transport
  • Cars: classic cars, project cars, barn finds, non-runners, kit cars, track cars, prestige cars that shouldn’t rack up miles. Car transport
  • Leisure: touring caravans, camping trailers, quads, side-by-sides, motorbikes, trikes, golf buggies.
  • Trailers themselves: box trailers, catering trailers, horse trailers (empty), exhibition trailers — collected from sellers and delivered to buyers.

Limits we work to

These matter because they keep the outfit legal and safe, and they decide whether we can quote:

  • Trailer plus load no more than 3,500 kg gross.
  • Load width no more than 2.55 m without a special-order move; height comfortably under 4 m once on the trailer.
  • Boats longer than about 7.5 m or heavier than 2 tonnes usually need a low-loader — we’ll say so rather than guess.
  • Hazardous goods, livestock and loads that can’t be secured to rated points are not something we take on.

Not sure where your load falls? Send a photo and the make and model to admin@trailertransportspecialist.co.uk and we’ll confirm within the hour in working time.

How we secure a load

  1. Assess

Weight, centre of gravity, tie-down points and any fragile parts are checked before anything moves. For boats we look at hull shape and where the bunks need to sit.

  2. Load

Winch, ramps or hoist as appropriate — never dragged. Boats are floated or winched on to bunks; cars are winched with a wheel net; plant is driven or tracked on and chocked.

  3. Secure

Rated ratchet straps or chains to rated points, wheel straps for vehicles, transom and bow tie-downs for boats, padding under every strap that touches gelcoat or paint.

  4. Check & go

Photos of the secured load, a walk-round of lights and tyres, and a second strap check after the first few miles. You get an ETA as we leave.

Can you move a boat on its own trailer if the trailer is in poor condition?

Only if it’s safe and legal on the road — tyres, bearings, brakes and lights all need to work. If in doubt we bring our trailer and lift or slip the boat across, which is often the better option anyway.

Do you carry loads over 3.5 tonnes?

No. That needs an HGV or low-loader and a different operator licence. We’ll tell you honestly if your load is outside our limits so you don’t waste time.

Will you drain a hot tub or disconnect a boat’s electrics?

Hot tubs need to be drained, disconnected and dry before we arrive — we can advise how. For boats, we’ll drop antennas and secure loose gear, but batteries and fuel should be left as agreed in the quote.
